Name: Walter Hamilton Acland Jacobson

Dates: 1847 – 1924

Nationality: English

Place of Birth: Small redbrick house in New College Lane, Oxford

Father: Vice-Principal Magdalen Hall and later Bishop of Chester

Last Post: Full Surgeon Guy’s Hospital London 1900 - 1905

Claim to Fame: Monograph on middle meningeal artery bleeding

He was beloved of his students for his kindness, generosity, wit and excellent teaching and also his eccentricities. He lived at Marble Arch and used to walk the four miles to Guy’s every day. He married aged 44 and tragically lost his one son Burton who fell in a pond and drowned at age 4 in 1905. As a consequence he retired as Full Surgeon soon after though he continued as a consultant for a further 15 years.

In 1876 he published his monograph on epidural bleeding which to this day remains the standard text. Although he was a general surgeon, this paper was a towering achievement and a major stepping stone in the development of modern neurosurgery.
