A position has become available at the National Surgical Training Centre, RCSI,Dublin for a research fellow. Broadly speaking, the research project is about the application of virtual reality simulation to surgical training.

 

This research is with a view to earning an MD degree. It would be ideal for a trainee awaiting a HST position in general surgery.

Job Description

Job Title: Research Fellow

Department: Surgical Training

Reporting To: Professor of Human Factors or his nominee

Objective: The Research Fellow along with a multi-disciplinary team will help to develop, validate and deliver a virtual reality simulation-based postgraduate surgical education and training programme for laparoscopic colectomy..

 

The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop, validate and deliver proficiency-based progression postgraduate surgical education and training programme(s)
  • Assist the Professor of Postgraduate Surgical Education, the Professor of Human Factors, the Vice Dean of Distance Learning, the Lecturers and the other faculty of Postgraduate Surgery in the development and delivery of postgraduate surgical programmes, examinations and skills assessment
  • Represent the best interest of RCSI at all times
Person Specification

Essential qualifications and experience:

· A medical degree awarded by a recognised University;

· Postgraduate training and education in surgery or procedural based medicine;

Desirable qualifications and experience:

· A proven track record in research to date;

  • An effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Ability to make decisions and meet deadlines
  • Capability to work effectively individually and as part of a team
